The Coffee Addiction

I recently saw this documentary titled "The Coffee Addiction" on CNBC. Since it plays such a large part of our lives, and coffee houses are one of the largest growing in the hospitality industry, please read the article, the Program Highlights, the videos and give some feedback to what you have read on the "coffee" topic.

Professor Blum

  1. I was not suprised to hear that Americans are addicted to Coffee, yet I have never thought about it before. It is concerning to think that people need coffee to get through the day whether it is the aroma or the caffine itself that makes people drink it.

  2. I totally agree that American's are addicted to coffee, growing up my mom would always say, "I need my one cup of coffee." Anywhere she went she wanted that one cup. I told her she didn't need it and she said she did. So after hearing about coffee addictions I really wasn't surprised to hear that you can be addicted to coffee.

  3. When I read this article I just laughed. Americans are becoming more reliable on consumer goods as life progresses. I would actually disagree to this article slightly because I think its more of a caffeine addiction than just a coffee. There are more and more energy drinks coming out packed with caffeine for Americans fast paced lifestyle. This has boomed business for this industry.

  4. I do not see this as surprising, many people count on coffee or caffeine to get them through the day. It is obvious to me that the coffee industry will continue to grow exponentially due to its addictive qualitys.

  5. Coffee will keep growing in the market. It won't loose it's zing, or its flavor, and people can sell it for anything and make a profit. The coffee addiction is grows and keeps on growing.

  6. As someone that works at Starbucks, I was very interested by the video discussing caffeine's effect on people. I work primarily during the morning during the school week and surprisingly many students come to swipe primarily for that caffeine boost for class. Having spoken with several customers who do not swipe and pay cash, some have found their own coffee addictions have become too expensive, but is not so easy to be rid of.

  7. I was surprised to read that coffee beans take five years to grow on their tree. That's a long time for something that is consumed so rapidly, apparently "400 million cups a day." And Starbucks having 170,000 drink combinations? That's crazy and it really shows how much an industry can grow. I mean, wasn't Dunkin Donuts like the #1 coffee five years ago? Now who even goes there?

  8. As much as I agree that coffee/caffeine is addictive. I do not believe that is always the reason why people drink it. I think a lot of it has to do with the supposed "social status" that comes with it. With Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts everywhere more and more young adults and teenagers are drinking coffee, which almost never happened many years ago. In my opinion, in most cases, drinking coffee is just the new social norm.

  9. As a kid I remember always wanting to drink coffee to feel more like a grown up. Feelings like that as well as many other people thinking they need the caffeine and energy have made coffee and its industry one of the biggest in the world. I didn't know exactly how large the industry had gotten but I was not surprised. I am curious to know if it is now larger than the tobacco industry.

  10. What could be better than waking up to the aroma of a freshly brewed pot of coffee? For many Americans, this is a daily event. Addictive both physically and psychologically, coffee is the crutch that everyone from CEOs to undergrad students can't get enough of. A chronic coffee habit is very hard to kick, but it's usually for the better since coffee dehydrates the body, raises the heart rate, and causes blood vessels to constrict. Don't get me wrong, I love coffee. I would advocate it over sugary energy drinks any day. But the risk of addiction is always waiting in the background.

  11. This article did not surprise me. It is obvious that people have to rely on caffine to get them through the day because everyone has a hectic lifestyle. I believe that the coffee industry is the easiest and most effcient way for a caffine addict to cure the crave. I thik it will continue to grow and new ways for a coffee addict to cure the crave will eventually come along.

  12. I think coffee is becoming more of a trend as time goes on. There is an increasing number of young professionals in the work force spending a majority of their time in an office, boardroom or traveling therefore in the US coffee is more of a grab and go type thing. In Europe, coffee in any form seems to be enjoyed in a more relaxed setting allowing consumers to take time to enjoy the coffee. With how fast paced the lives of Americans are it is no wonder people rely on caffeinated beverages, coffee included to get through their day. Because coffee is such an integral part of our lives more and more boutique cafe`s are popping up and becoming the "trendy" place to hang out, especially for the younger generations.

  14. I think coffee for a lot of people is a mental thing. For me, I drink a lot because I love the taste, but it doesn't do anything for me and I don't feel like I have to drink it everyday. It is also good because it has some health benefits.

This article comes as no surprise to me. it has been known for ages that caffeine is addictive, "mind-altering" drug. Millions of people in our country face addiction problems. Caffeine has withdraw symptoms that include things like nausea and migraines. The only difference between caffeine and other addictive drugs is that caffeine is legal and mass distributed. One day will caffeine be considered and illicit substance?

  17. Yes, it is true that coffee is a very popular drink but I disagree with the statement that said it may not be the caffeine in coffee that keeps people coming back. It is the caffeine in its entirety that makes people keep drinking. Caffeine plus more sugar is just what people need to get their day started and keep them up

I am not surprised that coffee can be an addiction. Many house holds have coffee brewers in their kitchens. Many parents or adults need an extra boost to start their day. I know my mom drank alot of coffee when i was growing up. And i do agree that many ppl do not know how there coffee makes its journey to america.

  20. This article was Interesting in the way that it showed me my own addiction, which I rarely think about! I drink around 3 cups of coffee a day, yet would agree with many above comments saying that it is the caffeine we are hooked on, not the coffee. I do love coffee, yet the energy drinks (although slowly killing me) do keep me going!

  21. I agree but i think that half of Americans are addicted to coffee .The half are influence by tea. I know I myself am a tea drinker.I feel that the caffeine is the drive for the energy in the common college student. Whether it is in the form of a energy drink ,coffee or tea. We are addicted to caffeine and coffee because we need that get up and go . Or that energy to go through our fast moving day .

    ReplyDelete
  22. Coffee has come a long way throughout history. The only reason it grew so much was because of the taxes the British were putting on tea, which use to be the main source of caffeine from the 1600s- late 1700s. In the beginning Americans thought coffee was too bitter but as time passed we grew to get use to it and eventually love it. Which is why it is no surprise that we go through loops to get our daily dose of Joe in the morning. Now energy drinks are taking a huge portion of our morning routines, no standing in line or waiting for the coffee to brew and cool down, just go into the fridge and grab a 5 Hour Energy then done. Soon coffee may become the thing of the past.

  23. This does not surprise me at all. I do think that many Americans are addicted to coffee. Not just the coffee, but the caffeine. I worked at Dunkin Donuts for 3 years. Trust me, people do take their coffee seriously.. I am also one of those people. There are so many varieties and brands. The coffee industry is one that I do not see going away anytime soon. Things just keep improving, like the Keurig coffee makers. I love them.

  24. Although it's not surprising that we as Americans consume 400 cups of coffee a day, I find it very interesting why we consume that much a day. Is it the caffeine, aroma, or taste? Me as a coffee drinker always felt that the reason I drank coffee is because I enjoyed the taste and smell of it, and depending on the day I enjoy the temperature. But it could be case of mild addiction to caffeine. Either way I think coffee is a growing field an Americans will continue to drink more and more every day.

  25. I do agree that Americans are addicted to coffee for just more than having something to drink. Many people pass a coffee shop and decide to stop in for a drink thinking its not expensive, but going more then once a week can get expensive. People take the time out of their day to make sure they have time to go to a coffee shop before class or work starts to get their caffeine for the day, but for some that is not enough.I believe that more people are going to be addicted to coffee.

  26. Honestly, the fact that Americans are addicted to coffee, is no surprise, really. If you think about it, there are either Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks or other coffee shops on practically every street corner. With something that available, people are going to drink it more often and therefore it will become a sort of addiction. I was watching the interview with the founder of Green Mountain coffee, and he brought up something I found interesting. Whenever they would come out with a new blend of coffee, they would let people taste it in tiny coffee cups. They chose the small ones so that way there was not enough room for a person to add milk and sugar. This way, people could enjoy the taste of true coffee, without the additives of sugar and milk.

  27. This story is not at all surprising. Everyday on our own campuses thousands of students and staff pour into Starbucks to get their caffeine fix. Many people, me being one of them, visit their favorite coffee shop two to three times a day. Coffee is probably one of our country's largest "legal" addictions. The coffee industry will continue to grown on a large scale because there is no particular reason coffee patrons should shake their habit. Coffee will pull in more and more addicts as time goes on. Restaurants will soon have to expand the types of beverages they offer, as the basic cappuccino will no longer be up to par.

  28. Americans claim to be "addicted" to everything. When really i feel all coffee is right now is just a trend. Yes, most Americans drink coffee in the morning, however to say they are addicted I feel is silly. If these people don't drink coffee will they have symptoms of withdraw? Americans convince themselves of the silliest things, like being addicted to soda, food, or even shopping!

  29. Though the statistic of Americans drinking 400 million cups of coffee a day may sound extreme, when you think about it and look around you, it’s pretty easy to believe. Coffee can certainly become an addiction, if you make it one. I know plenty of people who have to have their cup before their day can start, or before they get a headache from the lack of caffeine. As others have said, tea can be the same way. As far as myself, I enjoy coffee and tea, but not on a routine daily basis. The coffee industry will certainly continue to blossom as it is a routine fix for some, a pick up for the busy American lifestyle, or just a casual gathering place to talk with friends.

  30. As Americans, we depend on that first cup of coffee in the morning to wake us up and be alert. It is no surprise that Americans are addicted to coffee. Some people can't function without it and are bitter and cranky. That short buzz from caffeine can really get a person going and make their day a promising one.

  31. I agree.American's are addicted to coffee. As a child my mother would make coffee just about everyday. My friends mother needed coffee just to start her day. Even in class students my age are all ready addicted to coffee. They complain about getting headaches without their cup of coffee. Personally I'm hot chocolate kind of person maybe cause coffee doesn't really give me that burst of energy that people seek from coffee.

  33. So we're addicted to coffee. Of course we are it is the essence of life. I know I am, not only a know it, I am not stopping. It is not news that millions of Americans are addicted to coffee. Just imagine how hundreds of coffee shops have survived this recession all over the United States especially in the cold climate areas. Rhode Island is the smallest state of the union and it seems like it has a coffee shop every other corner. I had a friend visiting from Buffalo; very cold city, and he was surprised of how many coffee shops we had. Now let's mention about how profitable the business is. On average you can make around 40 cups from every pound of coffee. The rest is water, sugar, and a little bit of milk. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Usually coffee drinkers have some kind of pastry on the go, a good moneymaker too, also supplied by the coffee shops. The United States has a very fast paced way of life, and coffee helps people keep active. This is another reason why coffee is so popular nowadays; we need to be constantly on the move day and night. To this I might add, slow down, take a break and have some COFFEE…..

  34. I had no doubt in my mind that Americans are addicted to coffee. You just need to look at the Starbucks line in the morning on campus it is out the door; that is just our campus imagine most Americans leaving early just to stop by Dunkin Donuts or some other coffee shop just so they can have that boost of caffeine in the morning. Due to most of our hectic lives more and more people seem to be more addicted to getting coffee in the morning. Some people are to the point where they cannot start their day without a cup of coffee. My schedule just more and more crazier that I find myself drinking more coffee than I used to in the past.

  35. These facts don't really surprise me at all. From seeing students going to starbucks from 7 am throughout the day till night to receive their little bit of caffeinated drink. The level of the addiction can be brought even higher when we realize how much people drink coffee from their own homes. From having K-cups or regular coffee pots the amount we consume is amazing. I agree with other posts in how the fix of caffein that we get from drinking it, does help many of us start our day of better.

  37. I think addiction is a strong word to use for something as minute as coffee. I agree that people are becoming more and more obsessed and are going to continue giving in to this ongoing "fad". The uprising of more and more coffee establishment such as Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and Honey Dew aren't helping the blame can not fully be placed on their shoulders. Coffee now become a part of many peoples morning routine and it has just been building up since i can remember. People have been drinking coffee more and more since the first sip and thats not likely to change.

  39. I am not surprised that Americans are addicted to coffee. I, myself, am addicted to coffee and it's an awful addiction. I have atleast 2 cups a day, and if I do not get my cup every morning before I start my day, I usually start to get a headache... which is becoming a problem, and very expensive. There's just something about that smell of freshly brewed coffee every morning that makes my day that much better.

  40. I found this video about a year ago about addiction to caffeine. I feel it has relevance to this topic.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTVE5iPMKLg

For the most part, caffeine is an addictive substance, but its positives out way the negatives by a large margin. The coffee itself is just a medium (admittedly a delicious one) to deliver the caffeine. What companies like Starbucks and Dunkin' Doughnuts do is exploit that fact and charge out the nose to deliver. I feel that to say that Americans are addicted to coffee is a misnomer. We are addicted to caffeine, and coffee is a relatively easy way to obtain a lot of it really quickly.

  44. I do not find this to be surprising. Many people have caffeine addictions and coffee is one of the biggest. I don't think the coffee trend will ever die out, and therefore distributors will keep having an uprise with their revenue. Whether it's the smell or the sight of someone else holding a Starbucks coffee, people immediately desire to have one as well. People crave their coffee.

  46. What didn’t surprise me reading about ‘The Coffee Addiction’ was how reliable Americans have become on coffee. However, the estimated number of 400 million cups a day did surprise me, as well as America being ranked only twelfth word wide in coffee consumption. Even through tough economic times, the coffee industry prevails, being one of the most actively traded commodities.

  47. After reading the blog and watching the videos it does not shock me that people think coffee is an essential to life. I know people who think coffee is mandatory. My grandmother does not drink Greenhouse or Starbucks but every morning she has to wake up and have her cup of Maxwell coffee and if she do not have her cup of coffee she gets very angry and complains she has a headache through out the day. Me personally I like to drink coffee but I can also live without it.

I like many of my peers do not find this surprising. I have found myself to guilty of grabbing a coffee when i know i have a long day ahead of me. my father is a 3 large coffees a day guy and so is my grandfather. I believe the coffee industry will continue to grow especially with the growth of companies like Starbucks that offer different forms of coffee and seasonal options.

  50. I am not a coffee drinker at all, not even coffee flavored items are acceptable to my taste-buds, the first hint of mocha turns them away. But, I have always been aware of the addictive natures of caffeine and the coffee that it is connected to. Not only that but the cost seems a little outrageous to me for a daily cup or two of your morning coffee from chains such as Starbucks. That may just be the dislike I have for it however.

    ReplyDelete
  51. As a rather heavy coffee drinker, I'd agree that it has addicting characteristics, but at the same time, I often question if it's the chemical that i'm addicted to, or the routine, the ideal. I don't much care for the chains that are capitalizing on this, but at the same time, i spend money there when i need to without thinking twice.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I also was not shocked how many people are addicted to coffee or the caffeine in the coffee. Unlike others, I love coffee but I don't have addiction. For me, rather than following the trend or the popular coffee shops, I focus more into the coffee's taste, smell, and the quality. So this article wasn't interested to me, but I definitely think that the economic in this area will never go down due to the people's coffee addiction.

  53. I am not a huge coffee drinker but I really enjoy a hot cup of tea. I can understand the enjoyment of snuggleing up with a hot cup of coffee but I almost kind of view it as a drug. People get addicted to it and freak out if they don't get their cup(fix). It can affect someone's whole day if they don't have their cup of coffee, it's almost like a withdrawl. It's really weird to see how grumpy people are without coffee.

It does not surprise me that Americans consume over 400 million cups of coffee a day. I am a very big coffee drinker I have at least one coffee a day to get me up and ready for the day.
